Demolition of the caveau at Bank of Italy’s headquarters in Verona

Palazzo Portalupi, Bank of Italy’s headquarters in Verona, had a caveau that had to be demolished after restructuring operations of the building.
The caveau was emptied on the inside by cutting the floors into slabs. Those floors were suitably supported at the bottom during the cutting operations. The slabs were then removed one at a time in order not to affect the stability of the building’s outer walls.
The inside walls of the vault, located in the basement, were then demolished by making a series of vertical and horizontal cuts. The idea was to divide the walls into smaller pieces that could have been demolished without using explosives that would have generated vibrations, putting the building at risk.
